    STOU joined ICOIE2024 Conference in Hong Kong

    From 3-5 July 2024, Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU), led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taweewat Watthanakuljaroen, Dean of the School of Educational Studies, participated in the 2024 International Conference on Open Innovative Education (ICOIE2024) at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.

    The conference was held with the following objectives:

    • provide a platform for sharing quality research, effective practices and well-formulated views relevant to open and innovative education;
    • facilitate networking and cross-institutional collaboration among researchers and educators in fields of educational innovation and/or openness; and
    • promote studies and advancements in open and innovative education.

    The main topics of the keynote speeches were:

    1. AI in Education: Finding the Right Moments of Dependency, Scaffolding, and Competency
    2. Internet Dividends and Human Resource Development in China
    3. Debates, Experiences and Solutions of Using Generative AI for Learning and Teaching
    4. Distance Education Universities in Asia: Challenges and Opportunities
    5. Learning analytics in the age of generative artificial intelligence

    In addition, there was a session for researchers to present their research under 13 different related topics:

    2. Engaging students and learning design

    At the ICOIE2024 Conference, STOU presented a research paper titled “The Results of the Training of Occupational Competency-Based with Blended Learning for Elders in Thailand” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gan Chanyawudhiwan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kemmanat Mingsiritham, Office of Educational Technology. The research findings were presented under the topic of Agile/blended/agile-blended learning.

    On 25 June 2024, Ajarn Ajjana Kampanatsanyakorn, Director of Kumutmas School led over 20 Grade 2 students and teachers to visit Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU), where we are delighted that the university can serve as a learning resources for a wider range of people in the community.

    In this occasion, Asst. Prof. Dr. Phanompatt Smitananda, Acting President of STOU, welcomed the visitors. The students participated in various awareness-raising activities, including:

    1. Making fertilizer from earthworm castings and propagating various plant species at the Urban Agriculture Learning Center of the School of Agriculture and Cooperatives, STOU;

    2. Preparing herbal medicines and learning Thai massage techniques at the STOU Thai Traditional Medicine Clinic, School of Health Sciences;

    3. Learning about the history of King Rama VII’s reign by visiting the King Prajadhipok and Queen Rambhai Barni Documentation Center at STOU Library;

    4. Participating in radio and television program production activities at the Educational Broadcasting Production Center (EBPC) of the Office of Educational Technology, STOU.

    Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gan Chanyawudhiwan, Acting Vice-President for Academic Services, Cultural Preservation, and International Affairs, making donation at Panyananthaphikkhu Chonprathan Medical Center

    On Thursday, 20 June 2024, Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU), led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gan Chanyawudhiwan, Acting Vice-President for Academic Services, Cultural Preservation, and International Affairs, delivered the donated cosmetics, paper bags and medical supplies to the concerned organizations.


    Mrs. Tidarat Tedsana, Deputy Director for Nursing, represented Panyananthaphikkhu Chonprathan Medical Center in receiving the donated items. The cosmetics would be used for mortuary makeup and paper bags would be handed out to the patients to carry medicines home.

    STOU also delivered old calendars to Ms. Chanidapa Petcharak, Director of the Foundation for
    the Blind in Thailand Under the Royal Patronage of H.M. The Queen. These old calendars will be made into Braille desk calendars and passed on to visually impaired people to use in the following year. Ms. Chanidapa Petcharak took this opportunity to encourage administrators, staff, students, and alumni of STOU to donate funds to support the Braille books project including the production and distribution of “Easy Happiness at the Tip of Your Nose” (in Braille) and bilingual Aesop’s fables such as “The Tortoise and the Hare” (in Braille). These books will be distributed to schools for the blind students in the project across several provinces nationwide. Additionally, the funds will support the purchase of continuous paper for producing Braille textbooks and novels.

    These donation projects operate under the Green University and sustainability awareness-raising scheme.

    On 15 – 18 June 2024, The administrative board of Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU), led by  Asst. Prof. Dr. Phanompatt Smitananda, Acting President of STOU, along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thanasak Saijampa, Acting Vice-President for Strategy, Planning, Digital Technology, and Human Resources, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Warangkana Chankong, Dean of School of Health Science, attended the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL), which was organized in Tokyo, Japan. STOU had joined in the topic of Advances in Information and Communication Technology in Education and joined in 3 sub-topics, which were Technology and the future of healthcare, Technological innovations for education and Data science and informatics.

    STOU Alumni receives the 38th TV Gold Awards

    Mr. Surachai Chotparinyanon, Producer of “Dohiru” on Thai PBS television channel, a graduate of the Bachelor of Communication Arts Program (Film), received the Excellence Award in Variety Shows at the 38th TV Gold Awards.

    Since 1986, the prestigious TV Gold Awards, organized by the Thai TV Promotion Club, have annually celebrated excellence in Thai television dramas, honoring both actors and actresses and other key figures in the industry.

    School of Agriculture and Cooperatives conducts agricultural study tour in Guangzhou, China

    faculty members from the School of Agricultural and Cooperatives, Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU), undertook a study tour on agriculture in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China, for the fiscal year 2024. The project was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Monticha Putsakum.

    The study tour aimed to exchange knowledge on agricultural education systems, research, and cutting-edge technologies. The participants visited two institutions:

    On 17 June 2024, the delegates visited Guangdong Open University. They exchanged knowledge with the Vice President and faculty members on the university’s teaching and credit bank system and toured the university’s museum showcasing its history and teaching methods.

    On 18 June 2024, the delegates visited South China Agricultural University. They engaged in discussions with the Dean of the College of Agriculture and faculty members about the university’s teaching and research systems, especially in the fields of Agriculture, Animal Science, and Food Science, and explored opportunities for faculty and student exchange programs for joint research and studies. They also visited laboratories and the university’s museum related to agriculture in South China and toured the Yogurt Cafe, which featured the renowned dairy product of the university.

    This study tour provided participants with valuable knowledge and experience on contemporary agricultural systems, technologies, and innovations. This will contribute to the development of teaching, research, and academic services in the School of Agriculture and Cooperatives.

    School of Educational Studies Lecturers attended the ICET 65th World Assembly in Portugal

    The International Council on Education for Teaching (ICET) is an international association of policy and decision-makers in education, government and business dedicated to global development through education. It was founded in 1953 by a major cooperative effort of the world’s education community to provide quality education for its citizens. Scholars, administrators, practitioners from universities, colleges, departments and institutes of education as well as members of government ministries, the teaching profession and business leaders interested in educational development are invited to participate in ICET and share their ideas, research and experience with professionals worldwide.

    The ICET 65th World Assembly 2024 was hosted by The University of Minho, Braga City, Portugal between 13-15 June 2024. It focused on the teacher profession and teacher’s education at a time when the global teacher shortage problem was amplified in many contexts. This year, approximately 120 people worldwide were invited to participate in ICET sharing their ideas, research and experience with professionals, and presenting their papers and posters. There were three lecturers from the School of Educational Studies, Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University attended the conference: Associate Professor Dr. Ketkanok Urwongse, Associate Prof. Dr. Areerug Mejang and Associate Prof. Dr. Sita Yiemkuntitavorn.

    Associate Prof. Dr Sita Yiemkuntitavorm delivered her paper titled “Investigating the Perceptions of Master’s Degree Students in the Online Educational Landscape: A Case Study of an Open University in Thailand”. It was written by Dr.Sita and Assistant Prof. Dr. Wannaprapha Suksawas, the two members of the MOU team from the School of Educational Studies. They also submitted their paper to be selected for publication in the special issue of an academic journal. Besides Dr. Sita was chosen to be a chairperson in one of the Parallel sessions.

    Lecturers of Educational Technology participates in Computex 2024

    On 4-5 June 2024, lecturers from the Office of Educational Technology, Sukhothai Thammathirat University, participated in Computex 2024 in Taipei, Taiwan. Computex is one of the world’s largest computer and technology trade shows, showcasing the latest technology trends, including AI computers, advanced connectivity, and the future of mobility. The event was held at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center (TaiNEX) from 4-7 June 2024.

    The faculty members attended keynote speeches on Intel and Media Tek, and explored the exhibition halls, which featured a comprehensive range of future technologies across the following industries:

    • Advanced Communication, E5G & 6G, Data Cloud
    • Industry 4.0, Embedded Systems, IIOT Solutions
    • Consumer Electronics and Accessories, Touch Screen, Computer peripherals
    • Smart home and Entertainment, Immersive Experience (AR VR MR), Cloud Gaming

    On June 6, 2024, the faculty members visited the Open University of Kaohsiung (OUK) in Taiwan. They toured the Media Production department and met with President Chia-Ju Liu, executives, and faculty of OUK. The two institutions exchanged information and explored potential collaboration opportunities in the production of educational media for distance education in the future.

    On 28 May 2024, Asst. Prof. Dr. Karn Boonsiri, Dean of School of Communication Arts, receives a certificate and graduation pin from the Senior Executive Training Program on Urban Leadership Development (Urban Leaders 9) offered by Navamindradhiraj University.

    Communication Innovation for Political and Local Administration is a curriculum offered within the Department of Communication Arts, which offers programs up to the doctoral degree level.

    Prof. Dr. Michele Notari from Bern University of Teacher Education (PHBern), Switzerland

    The Office of Educational Technology and the Department of International Affairs organized a workshop on “Challenges and Evolving Learning Design for Sustainable Education” on June 11-14, 2024, at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU). We had the pleasure of Prof. Dr. Michele Notari from the Bern University of Teacher Education (PHBern), Switzerland, as a lecturer for the workshop titled “AI Meets Learning Design Developments in Distance and Blended Learning” held in the 2605-2605/1 meeting room on the 6th floor of Academic Building I at STOU. The Office of Educational Technology welcomed him with a visit to the Educational Broadcasting Production Center (EBPC).

    Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gan Chanyawudhiwan, Acting Vice-President for Academic Services, Cultural Preservation, and International Affairs presided over the opening session of the workshop “Challenges and Evolving Learning Design for Sustainable Education,” joined by faculty and administrators from the Office of Educational Technology. The workshop was divided into two rounds. The first round was for faculty members, and the other was for staff. The Lecture session focused on learning in an active and collaborative space. The practical training session covered Graasp.org and the application of using open educational resources.

    Key takeaways:

    Practical training session on Graasp.org and open educational resources:

    The training session focused on Graasp.org, an online platform that facilitates the creation, sharing, and discovery of OER. Participants gained hands-on experience in:

    • Integrating AI with collaborative and participatory technologies: Participants practiced integrating AI with collaborative and participatory technologies to enhance course design.
    • Applying Graasp.org for knowledge sharing and creating learning experiences: Participants explored the use of Graasp.org for knowledge sharing and designing diverse learning experiences.
    • Developing AI-bots: Participants experimented with developing AI-bots tailored to address the unique learning needs of diverse learners.

    Overall objectives:

    The lecture and training session aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to:

    • Utilize technology to promote effective learning.
    • Implement AI in educational settings.
    • Access and utilize OER effectively.
    • Design effective courses using Graasp.org.
    • Facilitate knowledge sharing and create diverse learning experiences.
    • Develop AI-bots to cater to individual learner needs.

    In essence, the lecture and training session emphasized the promotion of effective learning through the strategic use of technology, AI, and OER.
